ITT Standard / American Standard Heat Exchangers

Additional Information

Standard Xchange U-Tube Heat Exchangers are designed for efficient heat transfer in both steam and water applications. Available in 2, 4, and 6-pass models, they cover areas up to 1900 square feet with shell diameters ranging from 4 to 29 inches. Standard models use 3/4" OD tubes, while the SX2000U features 3/8" OD tubes. All models are ASME Code constructed and come in B300S for steam or B300W for water applications.

Shell Assembly: Constructed from steel pipe or rolled plate metal, the shell is designed for cost efficiency and durability. Ensuring shell roundness is critical to minimize baffle spacing and optimize performance. Techniques such as mandrel expansion and double rolling after welding are used to achieve roundness. Impingement plates are employed to distribute fluid evenly and prevent erosion, vibration, and cavitation.

Tubes: These heat exchangers use 0.625 to 1.5-inch tubing made from materials such as low carbon steel, copper, stainless steel, and more. Tubes can be seamless or welded, with enhancements like fins to improve heat transfer rates. Finned tubes are ideal for scenarios where the shell-side fluid has a lower heat transfer coefficient. U-tube designs handle significant thermal differences, although they are harder to clean and maintain.

Bonnets and End Channels: Bonnets regulate fluid flow in the tube-side circuit and are either fabricated or cast. They are mounted against the tube sheet with bolts and gaskets. Multi-pass designs may include pass ribs for consistent fluid velocity and pressure drop. Materials used include iron, steel, bronze, Hastelloy, nickel-plated, or stainless steel.

Baffles: Baffles guide tubes during assembly, prevent vibration, and direct shell-side fluids to increase heat transfer. They must fit tightly within the shell to prevent fluid bypass. Baffles are stamped, punched, or machined, with precise tube holes for easy assembly and maintenance. In liquid applications, baffles occupy 20-30% of the shell diameter, while in gas applications, they occupy 40-45%. They are spaced evenly to reduce pressure drop and ensure even fluid velocity.

Standard Xchange U-Tube Heat Exchangers provide robust and efficient solutions for various heat transfer applications, adhering to the highest industry standards for performance and reliability.
