Outside / Fireside Fusible Plug Model 28-403 conforms to ASME standards, with maximum pressure of 250 lbs.
A fusible plug provides over-temperature protection rather than pressure relief. Installed in the crown sheet of the firebox and extending about an inch into the water space, it serves as a last-resort safety device if the water level drops too low. When exposed, the plug overheats, the low-melting tin core releases, and steam discharges noisily into the firebox—alerting operators to the unsafe condition before the firebox overheats and risks boiler failure.
