Madden Sample Coolers are an economical means of reducing high temperature liquids to safe, usable levels. Corrosion resistant coils will safely convey many alkali and acid solutions at high pressures.

Sample liquid enters at the cap top and flows downward through coils of stainless steel or copper tubing. The cooled sample is then collected from the cap spout. The coils have ample transfer area to quickly reduce the temperature of the liquid.

On Type 1 models, cooling water enters on the left side of the cap and flows downward through a reverse flow tube. The water passes over the coils and out of the exchanger at the right side of the cap.

The Type 1 shell is constructed of 2-1/2" standard pipe. The cap is removable for cleaning. All connections are 1/4" NPTF. The cap material is stainless steel for stainless coils and iron for copper coils. A convenience bracket is included for easy installation. The bracket may be bent, welded, bolted or drilled.

Type 2 models feature a double coil, one coil inside the other. The cooling water enters the bottom with a 3/8" NPTF connection, and exits the top. Both "sample in" and "sample out" connections are 1/4" NPTF and are located on top of the unit.

Shut-off valves on both the high pressure sample line and cooling water inlet line are not furnished. However, they are necessary for installation.

Type 1 Sample Cooler Installation and Operation Instructions

Installation:
1.  Determine how the unit will be mounted securely to a supporting member. The mounting bracket provided may be drilled and bolted or welded to the supporting member. Installation by bolting the cap directly to a supporting member is an alternative.
2.  Bolt mounting bracket to the rear side of the cap with the two bolts provided.
3.  Install cooling water supply line and control valve, install at connection "IN" on the cap. The cooling water drain line will be installed at the "OUT" connection. All connections are 1/4" NPTF. The control valves are not included but may be readily obtained from Power Plus International.
4.  Install sample valve and supply line to the "SAMPLE IN" connection on the cap. Make sure you select supply line and valve construction capable of handling the heat, pressure and chemical activity of the sample liquid.
5.  Install the 90 degree sample discharge spout at the connection "SAMPLE OUT".

Operation:
1.  Open cooling water supply valve.
2.  Open valve on sample supply line. Let this line run free for a brief period to flush the supply line and the sample cooler so the sample being drawn will be fresh.
3.  Adjust the sample supply valve until sample flow is low enough to cool the sample adequately for your tests. The lower the rate of sample flow the more the sample will be cooled.
4.  After drawing the fresh sample close both the sample and cooling water valves.

Type 2 Cooler Installation and Operation Instructions

Installation:
1.  Mount unit securely to support member with two 3/8" diameter bolts through bolt holes. D on diagram.
2.  Install cooling water supply line and control valve, install at connection C. The cooling water drain line will be installed at connection B.
3.  Install sample valve and supply line to either connection A1 or A2. The other A connection will be the discharge line connection for the cooled sample. Make sure you select supply line and valve construction capable of handling the heat, pressure and chemical activity of the sample liquid.

CAUTION: Do not allow the connections A1 or A2 to be loosened by twisting or turning the fittings during installation of the connecting line. Loosening could cause the internal connection to the cooling coil to leak.

Operation:
